Coimbatore, the second largest city in Tamil Nadu, is known for its natural beauty and its quality of life. Located along the banks of the Noyyal River, the city is surrounded by the lush Western Ghats including the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve to the north. Also known as Kovai, Coimbatore finds itself in the news regularly for being one of the top places to live in India.
The city is an industrial and economic hub and hosts a number of firms and businesses across sectors such as information technology, healthcare, auto parts, machine tools, jewellery and textiles. It is the largest manufacturing base for pumps and motors in the country and a major centre for textiles being home to over 17% of the textile mills in India. Coimbatore also has a special economic zone (SEZ) that focuses on exports and helps the city to earn foreign exchange income of Rs. 25,000 crore. Coimbatore is administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation under five administrative areas, viz., East, West, North, South and Central. Each of these regions is further subdivided into 20 wards with each ward being administered by a local councillor. The councillors for the wards are appointed through public elections, and these councillors are responsible for electing the city mayor from among themselves. The Mayor is usually termed the first citizen of the city and is the primary person responsible for its administration. The executive branch of the corporation is headed by a Corporation Commissioner. The executive wing is responsible for basic civil services such as water supply, sanitation and roads.
The Coimbatore city police is headed by a Police Commissioner who is an IPS officer. He is supported by four Deputy Commissioners and 19 Assistant Commissioners, in addition to other personnel such as Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, Head Constables and Constables. The police also have a ministerial staff that includes Senior Administrative Officers, Section Superintendents, Personal Assistants, Assistants and Junior Assistant, among others.
The areas in the city that are outside the city limits are governed by local administrative units such as panchayats. These panchayats may be for the village or the smaller towns in the larger urban cluster that forms the city of Coimbatore. These local bodies are further subdivided into wards with each ward being headed by a duly elected councillor as was the case for the municipal corporation. The head of a local body is called the President.
The city has one parliamentary seat and 10 legislative assembly seats.
