About Chettinad Villa
Chettinad houses are characteritic of beautifully carved burmese teak, marble or granite pillars. A fine display of their status, these pillars used in the main courtyard gives an aesthetic feel to the whole villa. The thinnai ( a porch, spacious enough to seat people ), a cultural and social signature, passers by would rest there during their long walks.
A flat roof enclosed by a balustrade was used so that the lightest breeze could be captured.These structures screened the sunrays and allowed the wind to penetrate keeping the inner rooms cool and fresh.Courtyards were in the centre of the house for main ventilation by which the light enters the house. The courtyard acts like a thermostat which controls the temperature of the house. Negative pressure is created in the courtyard as it is surrounded by rooms and less exposed. This low pressure helps to draw more air towards it. Tiles used are the typical athangudi tiles which are locally manufactured and the Terracotta tiles easily adapt to all weather and climatic conditions in the villa.

Columns
The wooden columns are mainly used for inside areas and stone pillars for the courtyards (main or kitchen). In a later period, granite pillars were used in the outdoor thinnai.
Stuccos and Wall Painting
The stucco cornices create elegant lines around the walls which follow the different levels and pavilions of the house. Chettinad plaster is very soft textured and appearance is quite firm.
Carved wooden features
The elegant, shaped wooden columns are very typical of chettinad.

Balustrades, parapets and cornices, are very much part of the architectural identity of the region.
